Malaria, a killer disease, takes millions of lives each year. The Ebrahim Haji Ithna-Asheri Charitable Health Centre had organized World Malaria Day which takes place on 25th April each year.

The main aim of the event was to create awareness about Malaria, its prevention and cure. This event was celebrated as below:

On the morning of Friday, 25th April 2008, EHICH had visited its sister company, Temeke Dispensary which is in the rural serving the local community. At Temeke Dispensary, there was a good crowd of people who were explained about Malaria and its harmful effects which followed a Q & A session. A pamphlet in Swahili was also distributed on Malaria. Thereafter, we gave them mosquito coils, medicated soap and Ngao (Mosquito net medicine) as souvenirs from EHICH. Refreshments were also served to boost their energy. The crowd was really happy, satisfied and gained a lot.

On Friday evening, the event took place at EHICH which consisted of a slide show on Malaria, a short explanation by our hospital staff, pamphlets in English followed by distribution of souvenirs and refreshments. To see if our campaign made a difference, we handed out a 24-Hour Quiz Competition to all the visitors. In return we received 279 quizes out of which 3 winners were awarded with a gift voucher. The winners were:

  1. Qalbehussein Moledina
  2. Mohammedabbas Jessa
  3. Aliabbas Jessa

In conclusion, World Malaria Day 2008 was a great success which created awareness in the minds of people on Malaria and its effects. In total, we had 350 visitors at Temeke Dispensary and 400 visitors at EHICH.

Fixing our healthcare system as a whole is our primary challenge, and to make it happen you need to get engaged - to pound the pavement, get your hands dirty, endure real sacrifice, take on antiquated thinking and help lead the public debate.
